Must Do’s for Communicating Your Relocation Policy

If you were to ask your transferees today what’s included in their relocation policy, do you think they would be able to answer the question? If the answer is yes, then good for you because you are doing something right! If the answer is no, then you are not alone. For a variety of reasons, many transferees don’t have a good grasp on their policy, let alone the relocation process. Most of the time it boils down to communication. Communication is, indeed, the Achilles heel of relocation. I would guess that many relocation failures happen because there was a communication breakdown at some point throughout the process. Why is it so hard to get it right? Well, it’s easy assume that once that transferee has received the policy that they actually read and understood it. This is often not the case. That’s why it’s important to give transferees information in a variety of different places, from a variety of different sources. Here are some more must do’s for communicating the relocation policy to transferees:
  • Do engage your relocation services partner right away so that they can reach out to the transferee once the offer has been accepted
  • Do be sure that the benefits are very clearly defined in the relocation policy
  • Do give your transferee a hard copy and electronic access to their policy
  • Do arrange for an in-person meeting to go over the relocation policy, with the family if possible
  • Do let the transferee know that your relocation services company will be scheduling a convenient time to explain the policy benefits and answer questions
  • Do encourage them to ask the relocation company questions as they come up
  • Do provide a benefits summary sheet in the meeting and also electronically
  • Do provide education materials if possible.  For example, a sheet on how to budget a lump sum may be very helpful for transferees who have not moved before and do not know what things cost. Your relocation company can help you pull together useful information.
  • Do connect your transferees with past transferees, especially if they are moving to the same location
